Recognising Our Future Leaders

Thane Sherwood, Chisholm School winner and member of the TCC Youth Engagement Sub-committee

As the peak community body in the Tuggeranong Valley, the Tuggeranong Community Council (TCC) is proud to represent the interests of local residents, business and local community groups. Therefore in 2016 we instigated the Tuggeranong Community Council School Community Service Awards, which aims to recognise students who work beyond their school environment and support the community in many ways.

We believe it is good for schools and students, to work with the community to enrich their education and, for the community, to support schools and students and ensure their ideas are listened to and worked upon. To support this, TCC has initiated several programs, including:

  • Youth Engagement Sub-committee (established 2017): Open to Tuggeranong students from Year 9 up to age 25, providing a platform for youth involvement.
  • Annual Youth Surveys: Conducted since 2017 to gather insights and ideas from young residents.
  • Annual Youth Engagement Forums: Bringing together students from Tuggeranong high schools and colleges to discuss concerns and ideas. Ideas that arise from these discussions are then passed on to relevant sections of the ACT government for consideration.

This year’s School Community Service Awards recipients exemplify the spirit of community service, showcasing leadership and dedication. They are:

  • Calwell High: Nicholas Goncalves
  • Chisholm School: Thane Sherwood, member of the TCC Youth Engagement Sub-committee)
  • Erindale College: Sarah Swaysland
  • Lake Tuggeranong College: Melissa Vanhala
  • Lanyon High: Mya Traise
  • Namadgi School: Nathan Nowak
  • Trinity Christian School: Amadeus Teo

Acknowledging Our Youth’s Contributions

These awards are not only a recognition of individual achievements but a celebration of the potential within Tuggeranong’s youth. We thank these exceptional students for their contributions and look forward to seeing their ongoing impact on our community.
