Right to a Healthy Environment – February TCC Meeting

At the Tuggeranong Community Council meeting on Tuesday 3 February 2026, members and guests heard from the ACT Human Rights Commission about an important development in ACT law — the recognition of a right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment under the Human Rights Act 2004 (ACT).

Commissioner Penelope Mathew provided an overview of what this new right means in practice, including how it operates within the ACT’s human rights framework, what responsibilities it places on government decision-making, and how members of the community can rely on and engage with this right.

The presentation also highlighted current work by the Commission reviewing ACT laws relating to air quality, examining whether existing legislation adequately protects this newly recognised human right.

The session provided a valuable opportunity for the Tuggeranong community to learn how environmental protection and human rights are increasingly connected in the ACT.
