Message from the President – December 2013

eric portraitIt’s been another busy and interesting month. Our guest speaker at the monthly meeting was Mr Ben McHugh from ACT Roads. Ben gave us an update on the major road projects in Tuggeranong. The duplication of upper Erindale Drive is now obviously underway. Planning for the duplication of Ashley Drive is in progress but funding for the actual work has not yet been locked in. The Committee will be discussing this and other matters when we meet with the Chief Minister in early December.

The TCC took its turn to host a meeting of the Combined Community Councils earlier this month. This forum focuses on issues of common interest. The main items discussed were town centre planning shortcomings, loss of outdoor recreational facilities and the City Plan which has been open for public consultation. Some of the issues that were identified will be taken up with the Government.

We’ve all heard about the solar farms proposed for Uriarra and Royalla but there has been little activity about the one on the corner of Mugga Lane and the Monaro Highway. The Committee had a meeting with representatives of the developer Zhenfa last week. This project involves the 53,000 solar panels generating 13MW of electricity. The Development Application should be available for public comment by early December. Some information is available on their website www.mlsolarpark.com.au.

Our final meeting for this year is at 7.30pm, Tuesday 3rd December upstairs in Tuggeranong Southern Cross Club. We have two guest speakers. Chris Purdon from Purdon Associates will talk to us about the feasibility study she is doing for the CIT on South Canberra VET Education Delivery. Also, John Tucker will talk to us about ‘My home in Canberra’. It involves setting up accommodation in a safe environment for people living with enduring mental illness. Please join us and have some Xmas cheer during the mid meeting break.
