The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has launched an inquiry into local content on regional commercial television in Australia and the operational effectiveness of section 43A of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992.
Section 43A applies to regional commercial television broadcasters in Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and parts of New South Wales. Regional commercial television operators are required to broadcast minimum amounts of material of local significance.
The investigation follows a ministerial direction and will determine if regional Australians have adequate access to material of local significance on commercial television. ACMA will survey regional Australians, consult regional television broadcasters and undertake economic analysis as part of its investigation. Submissions are being sought from the public, with both individuals and organisations encouraged to comment on a range of issues, including the importance of local information in regional Australia.
