TCC President’s Report – 1st November 2016

TCC President’s Report – 1st November 2016

I would like to thank Wayne and the team for running the last meeting, it is great to have a deputy and a team to support the organisation. It will also be great to get back to normal after our recent ACT election.

Other events that members of the TCC executive have been involved with include:

  • Attended the 4th meeting of the West Greenway Community Panel – the panel concluded that based on the information provided, they are not convinced there is any priority for urban development in the western Greenway location
  • Icon Water talking about the regulator and future water pricing options
  • Spring Cleanup on Sunday the 23 October – 29 people attended but not as much rubbish was collected as expected as the lake was much cleaner – possibly due to recent rains that might have flushed out the rubbish down stream or maybe more people are aware and not throwing rubbish around, or maybe more people being more responsible and picking up more rubbish
  • Environment and Planning on 27 October talking about Parks and Conservation, significant trees and asking member what they wanted discussed at future meetings
  • Put in a submission re the FOY Plastics to Liquid Fuel proposal at Hume – Thanks to the work of Max
  • CCC meeting on Saturday the 29 October talking about the Deed of Grant, Precinct codes, concessional leases

Over 357 people from every suburb in Tuggeranong responded to our  Tuggeranong Livability Survey.  The survey highlighted that water quality is the major issue in Tuggeranong followed by concerns over local jobs and the economy, crime and safety and then public transport.  When asked what people wanted for Tuggeranong there was an overwhelming response saying they wanted a more vibrant town centre followed by improved water quality and revamping local shopping centres. Respondees were also against light rail and he development of West Greenway (Thompson).  A significant proportion of respondees also commented on NBN and the poor connection speeds in Tuggeranong

The Tuggeranong Community Council is currently organising community awards for students from all Tuggeranong high schools and colleges. The aim is to recognise students who have volunteered to support the community and community Groups. Max will put up a proposal to set up perpetual awards for each school. It will cost us about $1000 but will only cost us $90 pa for the next 17 years to maintain.

We would also like to establish an ‘Annual Award’ for an individual or a community group who resides or works in Tuggeranong and have contributed significantly to the Tuggeranong region and/or the ACT Community.

Therefore are running a brief survey to get your ideas.  It should now be on our website.  Questions are:

  1. Do you think it is a good idea for the Tuggeranong Community Council (TCC) to start a Tuggeranong Community Council  “Community Award” ?
  1. If you agree with the TCC Award we would appreciate your suggestions re the naming of this award
  1. How should we acknowledge the recipient of the award?

Also as a matter of Interest I received a call from the Canberra Times yesterday.  I was told there would be an article this weekend on Tuggeranong in the All Homes section of the weekend times.  Apparently real estate people are saying people are starting to realise that homes in Tuggeranong are a good buy and interest in them is increasing. eg 35 people at auction at Theodore last weekend.

The next meeting of the TCC will be held on the 6th December at the Tuggeranong Town Centre Club where we will hear about the Guilfoyle House redevelopment and have an update from on the Public Housing renewal program.  We will then have a small Christmas get together.
